# Build New Zealand / Full Context > A movement for industrial and economic renewal in Aotearoa. Build New Zealand makes the case, with essays, data, and open projects, for a country that builds again. ## What this is Build New Zealand is a civic project. It exists because most New Zealanders can feel that something is wrong with the economy but cannot quite name it. The country has grown comfortable as a service-and-tourism economy. Productive industries like manufacturing, energy, heavy engineering, and hard tech have quietly drifted offshore. We import the things we once made. We export raw materials and import the finished versions of them back. Wages stagnate. Talented young people leave. The project argues that this is not a permanent condition. Aotearoa can choose, again, to be a country that builds. ## Mission To rebuild a culture of ambition, making, and industrial capability in New Zealand, and to hold a mirror up to the country so we can see clearly what we build, what we import, and what we could build if we chose to. ## Goals - Map what New Zealand actually manufactures, partly manufactures, and imports. - Publish essays and arguments that shift the national conversation on building. - Track listed NZ companies that make real things via an NZX Builder Index. - Grow a movement of New Zealanders (engineers, tradespeople, founders, public servants, parents) who want the country to build again. ## Founding beliefs 1. A country that cannot make things cannot defend things, cannot afford things, and cannot offer its young people a future. 2. Prosperity comes from productive work, not from moving money around. 3. Ambition is a public good. A culture that ridicules ambition will get less of it. 4. The Fair Go only survives if there are real jobs to have a fair go at. 5. Māori and Pākehā alike are served by a country that builds. Mana is made, not imported. 6. The quiet decades are over. It is time to build. ## Projects ### What Can New Zealand Build? A living database of products, broken down by whether they are built in NZ, partly built here, or imported. Each entry traces raw materials, components, manufacturers, and supply-chain steps. The aim is to replace vibes with evidence, so that conversations about industrial policy can start from a shared picture of reality. Phase 1 ships as a scaffold with seed entries (houses, solar panels, rockets and satellites, batteries, steel, energy). Phase 2 fills the entries with researched data and source citations. ### NZX Builder Index A tracker for NZ-listed companies that build real things: rockets, satellites, bioengineering, dairy processing, horticulture, heavy engineering. The goal is to make it easy for New Zealanders to see, at a glance, which public companies are doing productive work and how they are performing. Live price data arrives in a later phase; Phase 1 is a placeholder table. ## Essays The essays section is where we argue the case: longer form, less hedged, more direct than a data dashboard. The seed essay is "It's time to build New Zealand", which sets out why this movement exists and what it is asking of readers. ## Who writes this Build New Zealand is a movement, not a single author. Contributions come from New Zealanders across industry, research, and civic life. If you want to contribute an essay, help with product research, or volunteer on supply-chain mapping, join via the Get Involved page. ## How to help - Read an essay and share it. - Fill out the Get Involved form with your region. We match people to research streams and working groups. - Subscribe to the newsletter for periodic dispatches. - Suggest products to add to the database. - If you run or work for an NZ manufacturer, tell us. We want to map you. ## Pages - Home: https://buildnewzealand.com/ - About: https://buildnewzealand.com/about - Manifesto: https://buildnewzealand.com/manifesto - Essays: https://buildnewzealand.com/essays - Essays / It's time to build New Zealand: https://buildnewzealand.com/essays/its-time-to-build-new-zealand - Index / NZ builder index: https://buildnewzealand.com/index/ - Store: https://buildnewzealand.com/store - Get involved: https://buildnewzealand.com/get-involved - Newsletter: https://buildnewzealand.com/newsletter - Privacy: https://buildnewzealand.com/privacy
